(ER030) Various Artists – N.O.S. Redux
Here we are again, another compilation of works from Alex Vargas, a most welcome presence in the Effluvia discography. Having by now established himself as a mesmerizing, thoughtful, inventive, toe tapping, dreamscaping musician, again this artist astounds with an array of impeccable dynamic and tangy beats! This album, colorful like a fruity parfait on Easter Sunday, will overflow your neurotransmitters with synesthesia. You’ll taste blue strawberries, you’ll smell pineapple with your rich taffy eyes. Tangerines and sherbert will sing a song through the tingling of your wagging fingers. More dance happy than the prior Vargas opus, these breakbeat, acid numbers will send bioluminescent mollusks floating around your room or studio or greyhound bus as if you had ascended to the deep, heavenly abyss. I dare say, this has become my favorite of the albums by this prodigy here on Effluvia. Having looked further into this man, rest his soul, I had only become more and more astonished. Though there are three different operations on this collection (One being a duo project with a fellow named Kronos, good luck figuring out which one, smartasses), that isn’t even the half of it. His work exists as whispers in the wind, and so many different syllables! So many different pseudonyms delving into unique territory but always following the artist’s moose. There is immediate progress in his tracks. Often, the end of a track of his will be completely dissociated from it’s beginning, opening as ambience and closing as breakbeat, often IDM, often dark, often downright surreal. Though with motifs all occurring within traditional music syntax, one can’t help but catch an aroma of peculiar newness. LIke taking a bite of a new fruit native to some quaint village. Suffering from a pituitary tumor, Vargas left this state of substance we call life in Autumn of 2010, bequeathing to the world his music. Though one of the dreamers, the illuminators of the cosmos, the interpreters of life, has gone out, and I won’t pretend to know what his true emotional impact was on the lives of those who knew him, but through his artistry, his care, his unconditional bona fide love for music in the most panoramic of ways, has revitalized a lot of strength in me, and I hope the same goes for you. Call up your candyflippers and do the paradox!
