(ER091) Ploof – KAL
Ploof, a name I hope many still remember and cherish! Though at this time the masterful sound soup of Daniel Wymark’s doing is not very active, there is still a large body of his work not yet released, and Effluvia now has the pleasure of welcoming back the man who contributed the first ever album to Effluvia, and this is great news for me, because he is one of my dearest friends. His music can be found everywhere! Genetic Trance, Sirona Records, Proc Records, Treetrunk Records, Very Nice Noise, JustNOISEit, Top of the Flops, 8 Ravens, and even more places! Fucking around with great talent gets you a long way, and the experimentaion of Ploof is just so fucking sick, to be frank. When the albums begins, you can tell instantly that the next long while will be an incredibly engulfing time. You fall so so deeply into his sound worlds that you’ll forget everything else. Often very humorous in execution, the sounds jolt you with unexpected moments of hilarious dimentia, and occasionally he will make you jump or wince from layers of beautiful lo fi psychedelic noise, he also has a great hand for lobit, which this release is. More than anything though, he makes music with a heart. Always unorthodox, sometimes driven by surrealist psyeudo techno with plenty of odd sound poetry and field recordings, his work has a heart, a feeling, almost symphonic in a way that can’t quite be placed. Very homegrown, the pieces he creates are not superficial or flashy, but rather personal and very much done by one human being alone with great care and a greater ear for placement, the beauty in accidents, and the dance between the two. The tracks in “KAL” (perhaps the title was inspired by the motif of kalimba music in this album) are a perfect manifestation of his handywork, often meditative and thoughtful, there is still an exciting mysterious aura, because you know something unexpected will come, and oh I must say you will not anticipate the direction this record goes in. I will leave it there. Please, look into the work of Ploof, because his music must live on in the hearts of those who have their minds open to albums from some far away place of thought.
