(ER102) Toxic Chicken & Ech(o) – <3
I’m in love! Toxic Chicken, one of the projects of the eclectic and loco Kai Nobuko, has always astonished me with the power of his releases. He is an unexpected hero in the netlabel world, running one of the greatest lobit labels of all time, Top of The Flops, which is now simple L0bit. In addition to that, he has offered other gifts to the lobit community, such as his many reviews of them (and hi fi releases) on the wonderful if not grammatically incorrect Yeah I Know It Sucks blog. He has also contributed to the online radio show devoted to showcasing great playlists of great hits of the lobit movement known as Tibol. His work has always been particularly powerful, disguising itself as silly techno, but having at its foundation a very fertile energy which is very difficult to contain and is expertly executed. I’m not quite sure how he manages to do it so consistently, but my working hypothesis is that he is an ardent believer in what he is doing, which is something one often doesn’t see in the land of netlabels, where people release albums like they collect stamps, not enough love and attention to each release. That can be said of his collaborator on this new heartfelt record, Ech(o), which is the brainchild of Tracey Fitzgerald Poist, who is behind the young but very exciting Gypsy Feet Records. Her music always displays a similar focus, and her personality always shines through with a great effulgence, which makes her stand out. It’s like you’ve known her your whole life, and so her music feels like a reunion. Both of these artists, so feisty, have here a very funny, warm, dynamic, and occasionally nutty record, each track going together well, but also standing terrifically on their own. They will make you tap your toes, but they also convey an emotion which is deeper than a lot of electronic music of this sort tends to offer. It is a real sign of love for music in the purest sense, and so Effluvia is proud to showcase it for you all.
